Digha:
Situated on the southern tip of West Bengal, Digha is among the top tourism destinations around Calcutta. The sea is placid here, and the shallow waters make it a safe haven for swimmers. If you're in Digha, drop in at the old Shiva temple at Chandaneshwar, 9 km from here, as well as the Kapala Kundala Temple near Contai.
How to get there: Take a train from Calcutta to Kharagpur, and then clamber aboard a taxi.
Shankarpur:
It's considered a twin beach of Digha, but is refreshingly devoid of the bustle of its more popular sibling. Rimmed with casuarinas plantations, Shankarpur is among the newer discoveries in the beach circuit of West Bengal. You can also catch some harbor activity here.
How to get there: Take a train from Calcutta to Kharagpur, and then get a taxi or bus.
Frazerganj:
Just three hours away from Calcutta is this beach, a popular haunt of migratory birds. Frazerganj ranks among those beaches of Bengal that have managed to retain their virginal nature, and is easily accessible via a motorable road from Calcutta. Don't be stumped if nobody seems to know this beach - it's better known in local parlance as Bakkhali.
